I now have a fresh copy of my wife's iTunes folder on the desktop of her login on the iMac.My many attempts to get Music to use this have failed. There was a iTunes folder and Music/Music/Music Library.musiclibrary from previous failed attempts, which I deleted.
This is how I was able to transfer my Music (not iTunes) library from one Mac on another. Both were running on Big Sur. All my music files are on an external drive and I have always used iTunes/Music with the 'keep music media folder organised' option ticked.
Reopen Music, holding down the option key as you open it. Browse to the /Music/Music/ directory and choose Music Library.musiclibrary. This opened up with all my playlists, album artworks, play counts etc. from my old Mac intact.
Your previous library must be consolidated before you do this - that ensures all necessary data/tunes are in that folder structure & not scattered elsewhere. iTunes should do this by default. In prefs > Advanced, the boxes for 'Keep iTunes Media folder organised' and 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library' should be checked. If they aren't, you need to manually consolidate, from the File menu > Library >

All the purchased and non-purchased music could be transferred together and you can perfectly keep the same iTunes library on two computers. The disadvantages are that you need to prepare an external HDD to save all your songs and this could take a long time. You can also use this method to backup iTunes library.

Based on the thread, I think consolidating and organising the library through the Dell and external hard drive first, then export the library file. I then need to move the source data over to the MAC, then import the library to Itunes MAC. I would then just need to change the path as the files would be structured in the same way?
If you are moving itunes and email from a PC to a new Mac you may want to read this. On August 18, 2010 I purchased Cucusoft iPhone/iTouch/iPod to Computer Transfer by Kadavy to move my itunes library, ratings, and smart folders from an HP laptop running Windows Vista to my new MacBook Pro. The transfer was NOT successful and Cucusoft technical support took forever to respond and by August 29, 2010 was still not helpful in resolving the problems I was experiencing with their software. Cucusoft also refused to refund my money even though their software did not work for me. I am pleased to say that I found other software that did work for me. I was able to use software by TouchCopy ($24.99) to get my iTunes library with all attachments including ratings moved over to my new MacBook Pro. The Touchcopy software featured a free demo that was clear and easy to use. This was a great feature because it let me see how easy Touchcopy was to use before I bought it. I would not recommend Cucusoft by Kadavy. The product did not work for me, their tech support was of no help and there was no refund. Two thumbs down for Cucusoft computer transfer software.
No they wont if you bought the mac at myers. when I telephoned for help to book the course, as am unable to move my itunes over I was told to take back my mac to myers and then buy at apple. Its been a nightmare and wish I had never brought it at all
Below we'll cover how to move your library to a NAS device or network drive as well as a PC. Since iTunes has been replaced in macOS Catalina, we'll also look at how to do it with Apple's new Music app.
When you install and set up iTunes for the first time, the software automatically chooses a location to house your library. By default, that location is C:\users\[username]\ Music\iTunes. That folder stores the iTunes library file, which is a database of all your iTunes content, along with other files.
Why go through the trouble of moving your library to a network drive or NAS device? Well, a computer that houses your iTunes library needs to be turned on any time you want to access the content from a different device.
If you have a network drive or NAS set up, use the software for your router or NAS to create a specific network share to store your iTunes library. Name it something like iTunesContent, then open File Explorer in Windows or Finder in macOS.
The location should say: I:\iTunes\iTunes Media (assuming you used "I" as the drive letter for mapping). Then check the two options for "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library." Click OK to close the Preferences window.
HomeGroup is not available in Windows 10, so those with that OS (and Mac users) will have to find an alternative method to copy files between two different machines. You can copy them from the source PC to an external device, then copy them over to the target computer. Another option is to use a USB cable to connect both computers and copy the files over. If your library isn't too large, you can always copy it to and from an online file storage site such as Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Dropbox, or Box.
Step 05: You are done. You have just imported your old iTunes library to your new Music app on your newly installed Mac operating system with intact songs and album play counts and star ratings.
I was able to import the Mojave (iTunes) library by placing a copy of the library.itl in the music folder - used the "option key" when opening the Music app - it does ask to "Create or Choose" a library (just like iTunes) - so I selected the old library and the Music App then asked to save as a new "Music 1" library
With that said, iTunes Match offers an easy way to move your iTunes library to a new computer without having to deal with transferring files from one hard drive to the other. In this post, I will show you how to transfer your iTunes library to a new computer using iTunes Match.
Pre-requisite 2: You must match and/or upload your iTunes library to iTunes Match from your old computer first. Depending on the size of your library, and the amount of songs that need to be uploaded, it could take a long time. Only when your entire library has been uploaded or matched on iTunes Match will you be able to go ahead and transfer that library to your new computer.
Step 3: After a few seconds, you will see a screen similar to the one below to let you know your iTunes library is now available in iCloud. Click Done at the bottom right corner of the screen, which will take you to your library.
Step 5: Once all tracks have been selected, make a right click on any of them and select Download. Again, depending on the size of your library, it could take a while to download everything to your computer.
Note that by moving your iTunes library to a new Mac or PC using iTunes Match, you will preserve all your playlists, play count, ratings, and other meta data linked to your tracks. If everything goes according to plan, you will have an exact clone of your library on your old computer.
